Osprey® 316L is an austenitic chromium-nickel steel alloy with a minimum of 2.5% molybdenum and a low carbon content. It has good corrosion resistance to most chemicals and a high creep strength at elevated temperatures. The low carbon content reduces the possibility of in vivo corrosion in medical applications. Some of its properties are:

  • Good corrosion resistance
  • Low carbon content
  • High creep strength at high temperatures
  • Spherical morphology

Premium Chromium-Nickel Alloy Steel

Osprey® 316L metal powder is a stainless steel powder that has been developed for additive manufacturing (3D printing, rapid prototyping) and is characterized by a uniform, spherical morphology with good flow and packing density. This is crucial for powder bed processes as it ensures uniform and consistent part builds with fresh powder layers. For blown powder processes, good flow also ensures uniform build rates.

Moreover, this chromium-nickel alloy steel powder is also low in oxygen, resulting in clean microstructures and low inclusion levels in the finished parts.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is chromium-nickel alloy steel powder?

Austenitic chromium-nickel steel is an alloyed metal powder produced through gas atomization. As the name suggests, it’s primarily composed of chromium and nickel with trace amounts of other elements such as molybdenum, silicon, manganese, etc. This alloyed nickel powder is known for its high creep strength and good corrosion resistance.

What is the composition of 316L metal powder?

Being a stainless steel alloy, Osprey® 316L is composed of 16-18% chromium, 10-14% nickel, 2-3% molybdenum, and a few other trace elements including silicon, manganese, sulfur, and phosphorus that combine to create a metal with excellent corrosion resistance and high strength.

Will chromium-nickel alloy steel rust?

No, Osprey® 316L does not rust easily as it’s a type of stainless steel with an impressively high resistance to corrosion. The chromium present in this alloy forms a protective layer on the surface which prevents the metal from oxidizing even in harsh environments. However, over a long period of use in harsh environments, it may begin to rust.

What are chromium-nickel alloy steels used for?

This type of stainless steel is a popular choice for many applications that require good corrosion resistance and durability in the end product. For example, kitchen appliances, cutlery, medical instruments, chemical processing equipment, automotive parts, and construction.
